Open Source Business Conference Day 1
The first day of OSBC has been really great. Just making connections with so many people from so many interesting companies has been worth the trip. And the presentations and sessions have been useful too.
Here’s a brain dump of a few things of note.
1) Matt Asay is a good guy. He introduced me to some great potential customers and partners.
Social Publishing ≠ Social Networking - So What Is It?
John Willis recently published a post that equates social publishing with social networking. While the post is pretty good, and I agree with most of the points, I need to correct the bit about the definition of social publishing. It’s way more than social networking. Let me explain.
Social publishing is a blend of three categories:
1) web content management
2) social software (blogs, wikis, social networking platforms, forums, etc.)
3) web app frameworks
Fastcompany.com Goes Social with Drupal
The new version of Fast Company that James Walker of Lullabot mentioned in January has now gone live and it’s been Techcrunched.

This site is a great illustration of the kind of “social publishing” that I was talking about in yesterday’s post. It is a blend of traditional content publishing, community/user generated content, and social networking.
A Dormant Drupal Opportunity?
Gartner, one of the leading technology industry analyst firms, published their list of the Top 10 Strategic Technologies for 2008 back in October 2007 at their Gartner Symposium/ITXpo event. I was at the event, but somehow missed the press release. Karthikeyan over at Seeking Alpha just posted a summary that brought it to my attention.
