You very well described what it needs to design a brand, a process based on the same psychological mechanisms we can observe when a child learns to “construct” the world: it gives things a name and relates them to itself and others. All of this can only happen with human interaction and by example.

In that respect, brand design should be easier in an Open Source environment, because potentially everyone can “play” with the product, community members, and so on. There’s a deeper meaning in the “Have a lot of fun!” phrase.
