Open Source Business Conference Day 1

By Jeff Whatcott - Posted on 25 March 2008

The first day of OSBC has been really great. Just making connections with so many people from so many interesting companies has been worth the trip. And the presentations and sessions have been useful too.

Here’s a brain dump of a few things of note.

1) Matt Asay is a good guy. He introduced me to some great potential customers and partners.

2) Ringside Networks is going to be a very interesting company that complements Drupal in useful ways. The notion of an open source social networking application server is new, but I think Bob Bickel is onto something.

3) The social publishing opportunity is even bigger than I thought. The need for integrated systems for publishing content, creating social networks, and enabling collaboration just keeps coming up again and again in panel discussions, customer interactions, and presentations.

4) Rob Bearden is a very smart guy. His session on open source as a distribution model was very lucid. He has some great frameworks for thinking about how an open source company matures.

More tomorrow.
