The ABCs of Going Open Source - RedMonk White Papers

By Jeff Whatcott - Posted on 28 April 2008

About a year ago I sat down with Michael Cote of RedMonk to record a vodcast about the open sourcing of the Flex SDK. After we discussed the news, we explored the internal decision-making process at Adobe (scrub to about the halfway mark in the video). In that discussion, I said the following about the challenges of gathering the right information to make the open source decision:

"Frankly, it's hard information to find. All these different licenses, all these different approaches.... The world really needs more resources that are are kind of level-headed dispassionate analyses of what the pros and cons [of going open source] are... We we weren't able to find the one definitive white paper that if everyone in our company read, they'd be totally OK."

I don't know if my comments had anything to do with it, but I was very happy to see that Red Monk recently published a couple of free white papers designed to help software companies consider the open source decision. They are a great primer and starting point. Check them out here.

The RedMonk guys continue to impress. Keep it up guys.

Thanks for the kind words ;)
