The Drupalcon Boston 2008 Logo Contest winner is...
All the votes are in and the organizing committee has made their choice. The winner of the Drupalcon Boston 2008 Logo Contest is Jason Poole of Acro Media, with his rendition of the Boston skyline behind the Druplicon running in the Boston Marathon (or at least that’s my interpretation!).
This logo will appear on the conference website, on all conference materials, and on the conference t-shirt.
Congratulations to Acro Media and a huge thanks to all the submitters and voters who participated in the contest. It has been incredible to witness the vitality and creativity of the community first hand through this contest. The Drupal community really rocks!
While I have your attention, we have a whole set of graphic design tasks related to the conference that we desperately need volunteers for. Dressing up the conference web site in a few areas, designing a few printed pieces for the conference, creating advertisements for use by media partners, etc. It’s all relatively minor stuff, but not something you want people like me doing :-). So I’m hoping we can get a couple of designers to step up.
If you are interested and available, give us a shout at drupalconBoston08Team at acquia dot com and let us know what your skills are and exactly how many hours you’re willing to commit over the next two weeks.

Excellent logo! Love it :)

Wow you didn’t milk the graphic design community enough by asking for a FREE logo? NOW you want free advertising collateral designed for you? Hmmmm…how about you come up and take some pictures for me. I have EXACTLY what I need in my mind and once you take them. I won’t pay…or how about you develop a whole marketing plan for me and I’ll have you volunteer your time for that too?
Hey Anonymous. Seems there is a misunderstanding here. If you are looking for exploitation in action, I think you’ll have to keep looking elsewhere.
Drupal is a nonprofit volunteer-driven project. Drupalcon Boston 2008 is a nonprofit volunteer-driven conference operating on the assumption of zero profit margin. And if there is a profit it will go to the Drupal Association.
So no one is milking anyone. Leadership in rallying volunteers to work for the benefit of all is nothing to be ashamed of - it’s what makes communities go. The key is not to ask unless you are willing to give.
It’s sadly ironic that you should mention development of a free marketing plan. That’s exactly what I and many other volunteers have been doing for the last two months: free marketing plans and free marketing execution to make Drupalcon a success. It’s definitely a challenge, and sometimes I feel like we’ve overcommitted ourselves, but something tells me that it will all be worth it in the end.
Hopefully you’ll be able to make it to the conference and see the power of all this volunteerism first hand.
Cheers,
Jeff W.
Well then you shouldn’t have had a contest. You should have just asked people to VOLUNTEER work.
Jeff,
Thanks for all your hard work. You really hit it on the head when you said, “Leadership in rallying volunteers to work for the benefit of all is nothing to be ashamed of - it’s what makes communities go.” Amen.
What makes this community great is that people respond to various calls by rolling up their sleeves, jumping in, and having fun. And what’s more, when people make a call that isn’t immediately responded to, most people don’t take it personally or feel rejected, there is an understanding that this process is a bit chaotic.
The contest idea was great. Just because people aren’t getting paid, doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be a competition or that the first person to send a logo should have it accepted. I think Drupal is modeling a way for open source to really be open, but also deliver real quality. That’s a big deal.
Again, thanks for your efforts and leadership.
Great article.
Shouldn’t this article be posted on the home page of the DrupalCon web site, or at least in the forums? I found this via the DrupalCon feed, but only by accident. Had been looking before and hadn’t seen it.
