Who Has the Highest Node Count?
I just noticed that Sys-con is running an article with the provocative headline "Ulitzer Will Give Drupal CMS Its Biggest Scalability Challenge Yet". In it they say the following:
Ulitzer, Inc., which initially made the headlines with its “job descriptions from the future,” announced today that it will launch its Ulitzer “beta” site on July 4, 2008, with 5,500 authors and 600,000 original article
Bert Boerland instantly picked up the story wondering if perhaps this will be the biggest Drupal site ever in terms of content node count. In the comments, we see an interesting list of sites claiming node counts that approach what Urlitzer is projecting, listed in order of number of nodes.
- Anonymous Defense Contractor - 10 million+ (unconfirmed)
- Linux Journal - 1million (unconfirmed - just looking at URLs)
- My-ANI.com - 560K
- Lifetime Television - 454K
- SavannahNOW.com - 427K
- Daughtry's website - 270K
- Sony Musicbox - 246K
- Line Rider - 207K heading for 500K in two months
Are there others out there that belong in this list? It would be great to gather more information on the profiles of Drupal sites in production. How does this compare to other sites out there? How many pieces of content do sites like CNET have?
I should clearly state that all of the above numbers are just node counts, and have nothing to do with traffic, so they are only a partial indicator of scalability. But they do show one dimension, and that's useful. And in many cases nodes are created by human activity, so there may be a correllation with traffic load for some sites.

NowPublic.com at the moment of writing this comment has 747008 nodes.
The newly launched Fast Company redesign is about 2 weeks old, and currently has 706,640 nodes. Legacy content is an amazing thing. ;-)
This little Imbee Social Network appears to currently have over 710k nodes. :-)

I’m working on a site, which should go live in the next couple of months, that has around 800,000 nodes at launch. Again, it’s all legacy content (both original, and licensed material).
drupal.org - 220k, :)
Managing News runs on Drupal
http://managingnews.com/
Managing News is a FeedAPI based news aggregator for teams. There are instances with more than 1 Million nodes, ~30000 new nodes every day and more than 8 Million term-node relations.
Main problems encountered: paging through large sets of nodes, MySQL instabilities.
